Weight Saving Ideas

Postby nick_r on Tue Dec 30, 2008 1:24 pm

Has anyone got any ingenious weight saving ideas for MK1's?

The Guy's at RSW who look after my car have put it on a diet (we ran at 1053k last year in line with alternative weight limits) but are sugesting that having taken out an extra 35k the remaining 15k should come from me  they have even sugested surgery in the event of insufficient willpower!

Now whilst not being the smallest guy in the paddock and probably the largest in a MK1, I am not convinced that they are right. for this reason I have agreed to a small wager:

For every weight saving idea proposed by other MK1 drivers that they have not already done to my car (and is fully legal within the regs) I will match the saving Kilo for kilo and they will donate £10 per kilo to the 750MC Marshalls fund.

what about the steel bars under the seats. five minites with the angle grinder will remove a couple of kilos. They run from back to front enclosed in the raised section of the floor. Happy New Year to you all. Arthur

Kind of picks up from a thread I read of Patricks where he went through the loom picking out wiring not required

Probably talking gramms not KG's, but many a mickle makes a muckle...

Number plate lamps are an MOT requirement are should therefore remain functional.

Doh....
Better go and dig out my old Number plate lamps
Back of mine currently looks like this:

Guess it will fall foul of the 750MC stickers "in the normal number plate position" anyway

how about using 4 bonnet pins for the engine cover, bonnet etc and getting rid of the hinges? That must save a couple of kg's i would have thought?

I ran without number plate lights last year without comment from the scrutineers, mind you I had a number plate and tax disc just to confuse the issue.

My car was about the lightest last year and that was without removing the bonnet, boot or engine cover reinforcement. Their gone now with the bits in the floor but the rear wing and skirts are back, it was just too ugly without them. Getting rid of the boot and bonnet lock mountings looks good, as with all the sunroof mountings. And could Patrick comment on the various hinges as that looks like several Kg.

A few people who race the production bmw's recon stripping the loom saves a lot of weight but its either time consuming or expensive depending on who does it.

I think Rivita is the answer Nick (for both of us).

You've probably already done it but how about using a lightweight racing battery?

Good point
The original batteries are over 15kg's if I remember correctly.
When I bought "Blue Meanie" from John Wilson, it's battery was a 17ah Jump Pack type that weighs around 6kg's
Not as durable as a proper Odyssey or Varley, but a fraction of the price
