spherical top mounts - legal?

Postby shivars on Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:03 am

Hi,

I need to replace the strut tops and am having some trouble getting replacements.

Are spherical top mounts legal?

(from what I can tell in the regs it looks fine, but I'm no expert so perhaps best to check...)

thanks

Hi Shane,

They're not permitted and should be encompassed within the following:

2. Prohibited modifications:
Modifications to the suspension pick-up points are prohibited; this
includes the ‘slotting’ of top suspension strut mounting points.
Cockpit adjustable anti-roll bars are prohibited. Offset and/or
adjustable suspension strut mounts are prohibited. Adjustable
spring platforms and hub-carrier brackets are prohibited, even if
the adjustability is disabled. Adjustable dampers are prohibited, as
are dampers with remote reservoirs. Rose joints, rod ends or
similar are prohibited in any suspension component; the standard
antiroll bar rose jointed drop links may be retained.
Any
modification which prevents a wheel from reaching its fully drooped
position is prohibited.

I'm back in the office on Monday and can have a look for top mounts for you. What do you need, and are you looking for new or used?

Cheers,

Patrick

ah ok that kinda clears it up, I had read the regs but not really understood what the spherical tops were... (here's where I admit I'm being lame and having a garage do it for me....;)

the strut tops are worn and apparently uprated TRD ones to replace them have been discontinued.

If you can source a decent set of either stock ones, the updated TRD ones, or any other decent (and legal) ones that'd be awesome (need all four corners). Preferably new, but used would be ok provided there's a decent bit of life left in them.

Assume you can get my email from my profile, otherwise feel free to PM me or let me know who to call/etc.

Many thanks

Shane
