ABS - 2010?

Postby Andrei on Tue Oct 06, 2009 9:31 am

As I was driving to work this morning on the very wet and greasy roads of Cambridgeshire and thinking of a potentially wet race this Sunday at Mallory, I wondered whether it was in the spirit of the 'level playing field' to allow cars to continue using ABS, or should ABS be banned from next year...

What do you guys think?

As far as I'm aware there are already a lot of drivers using abs and not using abs. I can't stand abs even in the wet but I guess it's just personal opinion.

Re: ABS-Gate

I chose my current car because it had ABS. On my very first test session I couldn't figure out why the brakes didn't seem to work properly. A quick call to Rogue got me the instructions on how to disconnect the ABS - problem solved. Never reconnected since.

Not fueed either way as it would not affect me - unless someone who previously used ABS crashed into me because they hadn't got it...

I can see how ABS can give you an advantage in the wet.

But it would be as difficult to prove as the "demon" properties of the AWT's suspension ;)

So for the avoidance of any doubt and ambiguity I think the cleaner solution would be to rule out the use of ABS in next year's regs.

I don't feel ABS gives you an advantage wet or dry so long as you can race properly (and brake properly) certainly with the older ABS units. If someone wants to choose to run it then that's up to them.

Ban it if you like, think its a definate DISadvantage for the track, even in the wet. Rather trust my right foot (or left for that matter) and a bit of cadance braking if it all goes wrong!! (for any who don't know thats fancy talk for stamping on the brakes repetedly while trying to steer untill you hit something)

Ooh... A left foot braker in the house!! You are such a show off, buba!

I hear what you are saying... but... I am still wondering why some people are still running it on their cars, including some of the front runners :?

Thats left AND right at the same time, and the handbrake and whimpering no, no, no . . .

Wonder how often the front guys with ABS actually need it. A good, smooth driver with quick reactions is probably more use that ABS.

Anyway "the brake is the enemy of speed" as a friend of mine likes to say

I think it's down to predictability. In my experience it's easyer to brake later with abs with less practice. Once you rely on something like this its hard to take the plunge and accept to be slower for a while until you re learn a different technique. I personally think its worth it though and believe no abs is quicker and gives you more control, even in the wet.
