WRECKED!

Postby Pagey on Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:20 pm

Like all of you, I have received an email asking me back to the forum, so I thought I would post up my unfortunate experience that happened last Thursday at Castle Combe. I've spent the last year modifying the car and getting it set up just how I wanted it.

I was there for a test day in preperation for the last sprint of the season which I was doing there in October. The day was going extremely well, we started off on standard pressures and quite a soft damper setting. This was giving us lap times of 1 minute 36 seconds At the end of the morning session we had adjusted the tyre pressures and the dampening to perfection. We were now getting 1 minute 29 second lap times and were flying. The car felt amazing, with bags of grip and plenty of power. You all know this feeling, and it is absoloutely amazing, there is nothing like it.

I went out for my last session of the afternoon (each session was about 15 minutes) and I was on my second/third lap so I was taking it easy to warm the tyres and brakes. I came to the last corner of the circuit (Camp) and began exiting after nicely kissing the apex. On exit I could feel the back end starting to slide, so I kept the steering wheel where it was, and kept my foot static and hoped it would grip again. It didn't, the back end came around so I tried to get myself to the inside of the track where there was plenty of clear space. All was going well until for some reason the car span back the other way and sent me backwards straight into the tyre wall.  I can remember shouting 'No, NO NO!!!!' and knew what was coming, BANG! I ignored my pain and instead got out of the car to asses the damage, it was horifically bad, the rear pumper destroyed, the rear quaters crumpled in, the arch was touching the wheel, the boot was caved in and the engine/strut towers are bent. I was absoloutely gutted, the car me and my friend had built to perfection was laying in bits and destroyed from one cornering mistake. It took an effort from a good friend to get it home VIA a trailer.

Here is a video of an NSX crashing on the same corner, this is pretty much what happened to me, except I didn't roll...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88QT5JD46NE

I'm now in a bit of a pickle, because I am still in fact paying for the car (loan). The engine and front end is fine, so should I break the car and sell the bits? Look for a car with a blown engine and swap it over? Should I try to replace the car altogether? I'd appreciate your responses on this as I'm sure some of you will of been in this situation (I'd especially like to hear Patrick or Matt's opinions on this)

The dream for me is to do the MR2 championship but the tracks are quite a distance away and it would mean I had a pure track car. I used my MR2 every day to get to work/Football/etc and not just for sprints and hill climbs. I would also need to buy a trailer which I assume are rather expensive.

I know this is what happens in motorsport but it still doesn't soften the blow, I loved my car but it has shown me I can't give it up, up until I came off the track I'd had the best day and the most fun. I want that feeling back again and I can't see any other car giving that to me than an MR2.

My MR2 was a Red N/A 98 Rev 4

Appreciate your comments on what my options are...

Perhaps one of the pros like Patrick or Matt could confirm?

I think the words "oposite lock" spring to mind or perhaps "lift off"

Fair shout. Sorry. Didn't mean to be flip.

Gutting I know.

No hope of jiging it straight? I seen some I thought would never drive again look fine next time out ( Art Gilmore for instance)

If not, breaking it would recoup some cash but you would have to start again and would take a while to strip and flog the bits

If you look out for a bargain rev three (there are some with knackered engines. Father got one for £400 and mine was £530. Ebay, pistonheads, imoc, autotrader on line) and swap the bits you would at least have lots of spares from the crashed car and not be massively out of pocket. Just have to get the spanners out!! Welcome to racing  .

I realise that mate, and I was being flip, as I hope Pagey understood.

Personally I'd have held the wheel as is AND lifted off the power if I'd have experienced a slide..............

Haha yes, perhaps, although I think with my confidence growing over the day I had got to the limit and in the last session I tried to inch another second faster a lap, and I was just going too fast.

Yea me too. I was guessing someone might know why/how it happened. Oddly though, when stripping the car for salvageable bits I found a massive nail in the tyre that was flat. This could of happened on the track or indeed when it was offloaded into the paddock area. I'll never know.

I haven't revisited much since my last post.

Well there was no saving the car, the towers were bent and crumpled on the drivers side so there was no hope. How much was found when trying to remove the engine, it was jammed on the drivers side mount where the tower had crumpled. It came out in the end.

Here are some pics of the damage:

Ouch indeed, my heart still bleads :( especially when you see what beauty it was before the smack:

Well we've now stripped the shell to pieces. I've sold a few bits (doors, front bumper, one win and a few other odd bits) which has given me a small amount of cash. Ade from MR2Bitz had a REV 3 shell and delivered it to me for £750. The shell is in good condition and the same colour as mine but is badly suffering from paint fade.

So far we have physically put the engine in, connected up the water pipes, connected fuel pipes/lines, and wired in the loom. With it being a rev 3 it is a straight swap. I've swapped over the whole steering column and will be swapping over the door locks too so I get to have the same key for the ignition and doors. The key is coded via the immoboliser to the ECU.

Here are some pics of the swap so far:

I've now finished connecting all the bits I can on top and put the interior back together after finishing off the loom inside the car. There are a couple of electrical connectors around the engine bay I'm not sure where they go at the moment. Will hopefully be able to see this once I cna get the car on some ramps to finish off connecting stuff up.

Question: Where is the connector that goes into the sump? I'm guessing this is for a low oil level warning, but I can't see where the wire comes from for this??? Does anyone here know?

Not having a car is killing me, so I'm trying to get it done asap. Once complete I will be re-spraying the shell at my friends spray shop. I've helped another friend work there spraying a Jag and a Range Rover and he has said he will help me do it, so I should get that done in a weekend.

Probably a bit of a bore to read all this, but some of you might find it interesting :)

Not too much of a bore.
Glad to see your'e getting it back together. Done now?
Are you going to bring it out to race? Nice pic of the slide. Proves you are well aware of what opposite lock is!
I also like the fact your'e doing a lot of the work yourself. I do bore everyone to death with it but I'm a big fan of "fix it and race it"

Hi Buba,

Yes the car is now back on the road, with tax and I'm so glad to be back behind the wheel, but mostly to be back behind an MR2.

The dream is to enter into the MR2 Championship, but the cost is somewhat extreme. I know it is cheap for a motorsport grid racing series but my mortgage and other costs cripple me somewhat. I'm going to re-asess my finances in the new year and see if I can make it happen, It will be entering sprints and hill climbs though for sure. I've got a sprint to do on Dec 12th which I'm looking forward to.

Yes that opposit lock photo I love, I've had the MR2 loose all grip on the back end plenty of times and pulled it back without too much hassle, I think I was just trying to hard in the instance at Combe.

Some more boring stuff:

Re-Soldered:

Interior back together:

Engine bay finished:

Car wouldn't start at first, just crank, and then realised I hadn't fitted an Immobiliser ECU. Luckily the REV 3 shell I got came with an Immobilisier and transponder, otherwise I would of had a wiring nightmare!!!

Front Coilovers & TRD ARB fitted:

It's true about the rumours, the TRD ARB's do bend the droplinks, one of mine was bent when I went to put it on.

I've got a fair few bits to get done before my sprint, but should have it all done. Glad to be back on the road and looking forward to doing the Re-spray myself at my friends spray booth in a couple of weeks.
