Rev limits?

Rev limits?

Postby LuckyP on Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:08 am

Been studying the vids posted so far of Silverstone. And I'm definately holding gears for longer (most times right up to the rev limit). But a few times you see other cars hit the rev limit in second coming out of the second corner (Beckets?) just at the end of the sleeping policeman style trip, where as I don't hit mine for another few seconds. Likewise the change into 4th on mine seens further down the straight.

Is this the rev limit setting, or am I missing a trick with a shorter final drive or gearing?

Not trying to start another debate, but just wondered if there is another box/gears etc that I could be using?

Sounds more like you're not carrying enough speed into (or at least through) the corners and that is why you change up later. Of course it is not as simple as just driving faster (we all wish) you may have to change your driving style, racing line, braking points, etc to acheive this. It may be that you are going too guickly into the corner and then cannot get on the power early enough at the apex to get the drive out of the corner.

When driving a car that wasn't fitted with a lap timer I was always told to use the rev counter as a guage for if I was going faster or not by finding reference points on track to compare with lap by lap.

You are not allowed to mess with the gear ratios or have an aftermarket rev limiter so I hope no-one is doing this.

Hope this helps.

There also seems to be some debate about differant rev's gear boxes having differant ratios. Some drivers and a well known mr2 braker insist that they are differant, 'tho I heard via the grape vine that Patrick thinks not. However much is said and little is truthed and I've not discussed it with him so I don't know.

I'll do a bit of research and let you all know.

From my experience the earlier 3SGE engine (REV 1 & 2) limiter is at 7,000RPM, where as the later 3SGE (REV 3-4) will rev up to 7,200RPM.

I've also heard the gear ratios differ from these revisions, for example my car (REV 4) will achieve a higher speed in 3rd to my friends MR2 (REV 2).
