Seat advice for a tall and fat b@stard :-)

Postby Andrei on Thu Jan 22, 2009 11:07 pm

Hi there

Well... there was no need to ask does my bum look big in this... as I only just about managed to squeeze into the seat of a newly purchased MK2  So a new seat is urgently required and would appreciate some advice on the following:

1. What seat to go for? Is there a place to try a few somewhere near Cambridge?

2. I am quite tall (1m87 not sure what it is in old money... 6 something I think), so how to I make sure I don't have my head banging on the roof or the cage?

3. Ideally I would like a sliding adjustable seat so that the car can be driven by drivers of different hights. Is this allowed? If so, what are the best options? I understand that a sliding sub-frame will lift the seat up by 1-2 inches so could be a problem with ref to point 2 above?

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice!

Best regards,

Andrei

Lots of views but no replies?

Don't be shy! :)

I appreciate that if you don't want to put yourself in a fat category  just PM me with your seat make and model number.

Any suggestion where I can try a few seats? Can't believe that Demon Tweaks now got a monopoly in the UK market!! Lots of people selling on the web but no show rooms left?

Andrei,

It looks like it might be a trip to D.T to try some, its a very personal thing so worth getting it right.

In the past, I have found Cobra at Telford & Corbeau at St Leanards-on-Sea to be very helpful and can supply a wider seat if nessesary.

Your welcome to try the seats in the Rally car as a starting point, when you next visit.

I definitely fall in the category of yes it does! so I went to GPR at Silverstone and found the best seat for me on my budget was a Sparco Evo XL, they usually have a number of seats you can sit in for best fit. At 2m I have had to fabricate my own mounts to have any chance of getting in the car. So anybody can drive it.... if they are 2m tall with a 44" waist!!

Yeah, GPR would've been perfect for me location wise ... trouble is they've gone bust :(

Does anyone have dimensions of Ricaro Apex (the inside part - the bum area so to speak)?

It say's in the Tweeks book that the Recaro Apex is 395mm, but from my experience the publicised dimensions mean very little to how it'll actually fit.

Well, ended up going to DT. The 3 hour drive (each way!) was worth it in the end as I could try 20 different seats.

I ended up getting a normal seat rather than GT/XL type. I guess the "S" in Cobra Imola S stands for "skinny"?

PS. Can't believe that DT are now the only place in the whole country to have a proper showroom, now that GPR are gone! Sounds like a good business opportunity for someone further south?

From memory about 300 quid.

If you are tall the critical bit is how you mount the seat. I had a custom mount made by AW Tracksport which put the seat right down on the floor. Give Andy Waters a shout there if you are interested. He is a tall bloke himself so knows exactly where we are coming from...

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Andrei

Thanks Andrei I will keep this in mind, I will know ho to give a shout about this. I seen other day in Halfords some race seats starting from about £110 (single peace ones) going up to £290 (adjustable ones). But i think should be looking at singe piece ones as it is important that you would be sitting tight and stiff, these adjustable ones cant be as good as one piece one isn't?

Hi Nero,

take care when buying stuff from Halfords - all that is badged "Ripspeed" is not necessarily for racing!! There is quite a lot of gear that is designed to give a cosmetic race appearance so it's best to check your MSA Blue Book for requirements for race seats

I believe adjustable seats are not legal for racing -- they are purely for style...

The best advice I had been given was to actually try as many different seats as possible and choose the one that feels best FOR YOU. If the cheap one feels good then consider yourself lucky :D If not, I would not cut corners.... If you are not comfortable behind the wheel - you won't be able to drive at 100%
