RIP Henry Surtees

Postby Z.CHAPMAN 28 on Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:21 am

I would like to pay respects to Henry Surtees. Henry, the son of Sir John Surtees, died in hospital after another competitor’s wheel hit him in the second Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch yesterday. (http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77088)

Henry and I raced against each other throughout our Karting Careers and although we may not have seen eye to eye 100% of the time, we enjoyed a fair few battles on track.

Despite disputes of track, John was genuinely friendly with the other fathers in the paddock, whilst retaining a wily attitude towards his son’s motorsport.

Even though our sport is dangerous and everyone participating are well aware of the risks it has been a massive shock to myself to loose someone of my age in such a sudden manner, especially after watching him in testing on Friday.

My thoughts are with his Family.

Rest in Peace Henry Surtees.

I was also very sad to hear this news. When I was working at Silverstone Karting Centre (many years ago) John brought Henry and his daughter to the track to try karting as they had already been playing with motoX bikes and quads at home for a number of years. I was amazed at how down to earth and relaxed they all were and caused no problems at all for me in their short trip to the circuit. I followed Henry's progress ever since and I feel for the family at this time.
