Power related query - Revision 4

Postby Pagey on Thu Jun 11, 2009 8:51 am

Hi all,

I've had a damn good read about and found out some long thought about questions answered, but I still have more :D

I currently do as many sprints as my wallet will allow, and hope to soon be able to compete in the MR2 Championship. My car is a MK2 Revision 4, and I've read in numerous places that the revision 4 is DOWN on power from the Revision 3 engine, and on here it mentions the reason for this is due to the EGR valve. My understanding of EGR is that it only works / comes into play at cruise speeds, not at full throttle. So is this the reason for the power loss between the Rev 3 and Rev 4's? Do any of you make blank off plates for this? Are the injectors a different size? Is the ECU any different?

Also, in a straight line Rev 2's accelerate much faster than my Rev 4. These Rev 2's do have a sports manifold and a custom made exhaust which I doubt would benefit it that much. As I understood, the later revision manifolds were far better and offered more power? My car does have an induction kit fitted and a De-Cat. I'm wondering what to check next for my lack in performance, my plugs/leads are standard and I believe them to of been replaced not so long ago. Perhaps the fuel filter needs to be inspected? My lambda changed 8 times in 10 seconds, and I'm running the 2.5 map. No faults appear by the diagnostics system.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Not a personal question but have you looked at car weight? My car was 50KG over on its first outing and I was getting out dragged on every straight.

Both cars have had no weight loss and I ensured I went to the loo before the drag! :D

I understand the Revision 2 is lighter (side impact bars, etc) but by 80mph to be several car lengths behind is surely not right? Do you know much of this EGR valve I mentioned above?

Thanks for your reply.

Have you asked about this on MR2oc as well??? There's a very similar post on there.

The rev 4 is down by 5bhp, so it would be running 168bhp, and you can get it blanked off. Exactly how it's done I don't know, I'm sure Patrick does though...
