Wheel Covers

Postby Will Cox on Fri May 01, 2009 5:51 pm

I have a query regarding the wheel nut covers. Do you all run with the covers on (a.k.a f1 style, to stop turbulent air circling around the air ducts and causing the air to stall) or do those with Colin Chapman esque minds, remove them on the basis its extra unsprung weight. Now I may be being a complete berk here asking about this, especially as my car isnt even race ready yet, but I was curious as to whether there is any difference.
Look forward to your replys :)

Wheel bits

Postby TokyoDave #38 on Fri May 01, 2009 6:34 pm

I have always run them, more cosmetic than anything (they are colour co-ordinated) any areo benifit would be a bonus and small. Interestingly I had to remove them at Brands as the scrutineer said "wheel embelishments are not allowed according to the Blue Book" They will be back on at Cadwell!

The Blue Book essentially says that the wheel centres should be removed. We don't have them fitted on any of our cars.

Thanks for your clarification Patrick. Sorry for dropping you in it Dave, maybe the decision of Brands Hatch for the covers can go to Tribunal Arbitral du Sport like proper f1 style

Will, I know you've nearly got the car ready to take the roll cage, but how are the carbonfibre floor and tripple deck diffuser coming on? Have you put the model into the wind tunnel yet?

One step ahead

Postby TokyoDave #38 on Mon May 04, 2009 11:43 am

Diffusers? they're so last year.
Having seen a program about the "Shark suit" used to great effect in the pool at the last Olympics, it seems they are covered in thousands of tiny hooks to stop drag and improve air/hydro flow. I will be covering my entire car with velcro ( the hooked stuff not the fuzzy side, that would just look stupid) in time for Cadwell.
It may take F1 a while to catch up but remember, you heard it here first!

You'd best hope no-one near you has used the fuzzy stuff!

I was considering putting bubble wrap all around mine...

So I suppose sneaking up and putting some fuzzy on the rear of Mark J when he's not looking(his car that is  ) is out of the question then?
It would certainly give new meaning to "gaining a tow".
