Wheel and tyre sizes...

Postby Rowland on Sun Dec 21, 2008 1:08 pm

Patrick,

Can you tell me if you're in a position to disclose the wheel and tyre sizes the regulations dictate for the mk3's next year?
As you'll be aware there was a wheel size change for post 2003 cars which mine is.
If possible, can you tell me required wheel diameter, width and offsets front and rear?

Also, with regard to tyre dimensions it seems that the Toyo R888 doesn't come in the 185/15 OEM front tyre size.
The narrowest R888 15 is 195.
If we were to run a 195 front and a 205 rear then that reduces the stagger by half.

Will we use a 215 for the rear with 195 fronts perhaps?

Hi Rowland,

The tyre sizes as listed in the proposed 2009 regulations are as follows:

Front: 195/50/15
Rear: 205/50/15

These are the closest we can get to the stock sizes in R888 and I'm confident that the different front size will not cause us any issues. As with all things mk3 this year though, if it needs fine tuning we can look at it again.

16" rear wheels are not currently permitted in order to keep everything as simple and comparable as possible.

Cheers,

Patrick

Thanks for the clarification Patrick, I've received the 2009 regulations this morning detailing this also.
I notice there is no reference to wheel offsets in the regulations.
(5.12: Wheels / Steering)
If I was to buy non OEM replacement wheels for my mk3 race car, what wheel offset would I need front and rear?

Cheers,

Rowland

5.8.3. Wheelbase/track:
The wheelbase and track must be standard for the model being
raced; there is a tolerance of 2mm on the track dimensions.

Standard offset for the MR2 Roadster is ET45, but in theory you could be 1mm out on each wheel.

Patrick,

Following on from the Toyo price increase thread, do you have any idea when the mk3 R888's will be available and at what price?

Cheers buddy,

Rowland

Not yet, but I did discuss the requirement with Toyo at Autosport. They will get back to me this week.

Do you think anyone would want to swap 15" oem rears for the oem 16"s ? I'm not a member of mr2oc etc and think it may be worth while to sign up.

Hi Alric, I hear that you're become the third member of the mk3 hairdresser club?!

Regarding the wheels I've chosen to sell my 15"/16" post revision wheels and buy a complete set of pre revision 15's.
The later wheels have a slightly different 'diamond turned' finish by comparison. (Mine did anyway, 2004 car)
With regards to swapping only your rear wheels, this’ll probably impact on your sale.
(Who’d want opposing finished wheels front to back, if you’re with me?)
The only problem with the early 15 inch wheels is many of them are in a poor oxidised, bubbling state.
Anyhow, I've just sold my set of post revision wheels for £167.00 on eBay complete with budget tyres with a fair bit of tread remaining.
A set of early wheels in good condition will cost anything from £50-£90

Hope this helps.

Rowland

PS. Might be worth you signing up to the MR2 Roadster Owners Club, it's full of info you may find useful.
