Technical issues relating to mk2 MR2 Championship Race cars

newby info!

Postby laustin on Tue Jun 02, 2009 8:27 pm

hi

ive just got a couple of questions for you kind folks if you could answer them it would be very appreciated!

im looking at getting into this championship... coming from karting...

ive been reading the post on these forums about the mr2 mk2 cars... and it looks to me the rev 3 engine is the best engine to run? but the rev 5 would be the best chassis handling wise? how correct is that? and would i be allowed to swap them over?

ive been offered a car from my college for (what appears to me) a ridiculously low price its a H reg so i think this would meen it is a rev 1 aparently the engine has been reconditioned would i be allowed to run this in the class? or would i need to swap it? also does anyone know where the engine code is on the engine? so i can see what series it is,

just one last question what should i be looking at spending in a season of mr2 racing?

cheers!

Hello.

Welcome!

Don't know too much about the tech side, but financially, depends.

Do you want to camp, do b&bs or hotels?

Cost of the car to champ spec aside, including tyres at the rate I'm doing them, I would say:

Camping - £9,000

B&Bs - £10,500

Hotels - £13,000

If you want to change the spec of your car mid season add £500 - £2000 depending on what you want to do.

So as I bought the car at £6,500 I'm looking at £20,000 this year.

Welcome!! Enjoy!!

Hi, I've got a similar thread to this in the general discussion forum...

You say £9k if you camp...any idea how this breaks down?

I see entry fees are about (on average) £250 per event, so say £3k for the season, + (say) 4 sets of tyres at ~£350 per set, camping cost is presumably fairly low, so just curious to see where the rest is likely to go. I realise that there are obviously other costs than those above but I would have thought as a newbie that those would be the major costs. Is it on car upkeep, testing or just miscellaneous costs?

Any info would be great, I'm a bit knocked back by this as I'd looked through what I thought I would need and came to a minimum of around £6k for a season...which I would have to be fairly close to for it to be viable for me, now I'm wondering if I can afford it at all :(

Hmm, yeah, my fag packet calc includes having to test at the circuits and a whole shed of fuel from dan saff, as I've not been most of them. This significantly raises the cost - so yeah. You could get away with £6,000. Others on here have done full years so they might be able to help more.

Cheers

all sounds fairly reasonable to me!

I am not doing the full season, but based on the rounds I have done I think you can race on your budget so long as you don't have any major unexpected expense such as a large shunt or engine let go. Motorsport is NEVER cheap but this is a very cost effective way of racing good cars with full and competitve grids. It depends what your goals are and how much you can do or get others to do for you to keep costs down. Some drivers (such as LuckyP) have much deeper pockets than others so don't let that put you off, just be realistic. Not testing will save a shed load but your improvement will be more limited - trust me I know!

Phew, thanks guys. I thought the dream was over when I saw £9k budget for camping.

Of course I realise motorsport isn't cheap, but I can do most mechanical things myself (except for major stuff like engine/gearbox internals etc.) so I'm hoping that will keep the cost down. I realise that my testing is going to be limited by budget and this will make it very difficult to progress, but I'm ok with that. I'd rather be racing at the back than not at all! :D

I think it's called the Minardi principle :D

hmmm you say your not doing a full season? do they do it the same as karting where they drop your worst round? (thus meening you don't need to attend every round)
