Exhaust Heat Shield - request for clarification

Postby WillJohnson on Fri Sep 11, 2009 7:13 am

I thought I was getting some resonance off this and decided to remove and re-fit it. BIG mistake...

One of the shield's mounting bolts has sheared in the exhaust manifold and 2 of the other holes in the shield itself have kind-of disintegrated where it fits near to the cylinder head.

Q1: Is this an "eligibiltiy" item that must be fitted?
Q2: Is its absence likely to cause any damage or loss of performance?
Q3: Is it permitted to wrap the exhaust manifold in heat-insulation instead?

Thanks
JOHN

No.

It may cause a very small (negligible?) drop in performance. (IMO)

No.

Snap! (Literally).

I ran with it without shields at Silverstone.

Sir, step away from the tool box!

What next then Pete? Can we be arsed to try to remove the remains of the stud and the 2 rusty bolts?

Not gonna bother John. I did have a look round after a race to see if anything was about to melt off, but all OK.

If you do feel that you want to try to remove the bolts and putting a new cover on (watch your plastic stuff if not cos we've had dizzy caps melt before without the propper shields) blow-torch the sh1t out of the manifold around the bolt (but not the bolt if you can help it) and then very gently tweek it (till it snaps then curse like hell and wish you hadn't bothered and wasted the gas) till it comes undone . . . . maybe. I have had some success like this. Heat it a lot !! Sorry if i'm telling granny how to suck.

Thanks very much. Sounds like a winter job - particularly in an unheated garage...

Sadly the bolt sheared about half a mm below the manifold lug - I fear it's a drill and extractor tool jobby.
