Doni race under threat? - Now Cancelled.

Postby Andrei on Fri Apr 10, 2009 9:30 pm

This week's Autosport review of the racing at Doni doesn't make good reading :( Potentially they might not get their license renewed or if they do they will be required to yellow flag half of the track because apparently it's too dangerous with all the building work that is in place...

That would be very bad news...

Fingers crossed they will get it sorted by September!

I heard that from a friend at the start of April. Bad news it seems. If they don't get it sorted will the rounds be scrapped, reschedueled or relocated?

The last time 750MC lost a major chunk of a race weekend (at Lydden last year through snow), they ran extra races at later events.

This was what I had in mind when I started digging that tunnel! (I have to be at at a wedding on the date currently scheduled!)

I'm sure Robin will be keeping a very close eye on what's happening - as are various major championship organisers.

I have to say, the prospect of racing (even at Donington) with a section of track permanently under a yellow flag, is pretty unappealling.

I'll ask the question at the RTC meeting tonight.

They have postponed F3/Brit GT until July and there are a number of other big events running well before September. Was there yesterday and they are working to resolve the situation so I don't think the Donni round is in any danger.

According to Donington Park, it's business as usual from mid-May:

Unfortunately, due to the current uncertainty 750Mc have taken the decision to pull the Donington meeting and replace it with a second visit to Snetterton on the same weekend.

I will amend the calender on the website this evening.

I'm sure the 750MC will have done everyting they can. At least the rounds don't just "disapear" from the calendar, but Snetterton is a trek (not as much as Anglesey though  ). I'd love a second race at Silverstone or a trip to Oulton Park, Thruxton or Castle Coombe. I imagine these have already been looked at though and to be able to find a venue able to take the meeting at this relatively late notice as it is and on the same weekend is good going. Well done Robin.

Now that Doni is up and running again what are the chances of it being re-instated on the calendar???

Andrei,
it will sound weird but I think the reason this will not happen is BECAUSE the circuit is back up and running so quickly! A few high profile events were postponed from earlier this year and I think they are expecting to reschedule them later in the year. Thye may even have financial penalties if they do not.

I think 750mc have realised this and figured that our meeting would suddenly be "bumped" in favour of a big-ticket event - so they took the decision to jump before they were pushed. Even with compensation payments to 750MC, Donington will make more money if the event has got 20 - 25,000 spectators (or more)!

I can remember a previous year where we had Donington on the provisional calendar at the start if the season but then it disappeared because British Superbikes wanted the date.
