Burning oil

Postby Guy on Wed Aug 26, 2009 3:24 pm

Hi guys

I seem to be burning alot of oil throughout the course of a race weekend (as anyone who's followed me will know) and i just wondered if anyone might be able to shed any light as to why it might be?

Regards

Guy - if it helps with the diagnosis the smoke you were pumping out was quite sooty, rather than the whiter smoke you sometimes get. At that point I'll have to pass to the engineers in the audience to comment.

Guy,

Give me a call at work tomorrow, I may have some suggestions for you. Smoke looked blue to me which suggests oil.

Cheers,

Patrick

After reviewing the footage, it looks like you're burning oil during right hand corners or immediately afterwards. This would suggest that you're suffering from oil surge. Is it possible that you've overfilled the oil?

from following you a little I have to say the smoke seems to come pretty much every time you stand on the gas. It could be over filling as Patrick says (dangerous 'cos you can blow your crank seals) but I rather fancy its coming past the piston rings. Another possability is that it is very over rich and you are getting unburnt fuel coming out, the smoke looked quite black to me. Are your spark plugs very sooty?
