Andrei Bgatov aka The Black Russian (Car 55)

Andrei learned to drive in a Lada on the icy streets of Moscow. In 2003, he completed the Race Academy course at Silverstone and graduated by winning two Formula First races. Even at the tender age of 31 he felt positively old in the single seater community, so decided to switch to saloon and sports cars. Having done a few races in the MX5 Championship and Britcar Production S1 (in Honda Civic), Andrei joined the Fun Cup endurance series (you know the VW Beetle-on-steroids looking thingy).

In 2007, he completed his first ever full racing season with JPR Team Triple Won, becoming the first ever team to win both 'Team of the Day' and 'Highest Placed JPR Rental Trophies' in the same race at Brands Hatch! In 2008, Andrei was back in the Funcup with Team O'BR/Perrys for a couple of races. The debut of the new car was very successful and the team climbed from 28th to finish in the top ten, at Snetterton. However the race at Oulton effectively ended at the very start with a broken drive shaft (although the beauty of endurance racing was that it got fixed in 12 minutes and we still did nearly the whole 4 hour race). "That's motor racing..." was a phrase I got to hear too many times and now absolutely hate :x

2009 was going to be another year in the Funcup... until a conversation with Patrick Mortell at the Autosport Show and a purchase of an Mk2 car two weeks later! The car is black hence the nick name 8) The plan was to do a few races and test days and see how it goes.... however after a promising start at Snetterton Andrei decided to skip the testing and focus on the racing

Highlights of the 2009 season so far:

Snetterton - First race meeting in March'09. Pole position for both races; finished 4th and 2nd! Second overall in the Championship. Not a bad start 8)

Brands Hatch in April - qualified 3rd; set the fastest lap in Race 1; finished 5th and 6th in the MK2 class. Third overall in the Championship.

Cadwell Park in May - qualified 3rd and 6th; finished 5th in class in both races (despite having an 'off' in the second race). Still third in the Championship. Yipee! :D

Anglessey in June - no time and money to race in this one :( so dropped 2 races and fell down to 6th place in the overall standings

Cadwell Park in July - back in the groove! Qualified 4th and 5th and finished in the same positions (despite being hit and sent off the track on the opening lap in Race 2). Still sixth overall but closing the gap!

Silverstone in August - BTCC ace Paul O'Neill joins in driving the VIP Guest car! Qualified 2nd, just 0.02 seconds behind Paul! Made a cracking start and led for the first few laps. Dropped to 4th in the end, just 1.8 seconds behind Paul. Exciting stuff!! :)

Snetterton in September - back to my home circuit and back to top form... and more! First win of the season in Race 1!! And a 3rd place in Race 2. Fantastic weekend all round, as AW Tracksport locked out the first row of the grid for both races, and the whole podium in Race 2!

Mallory Park in October - another newish track to get to grips with... only driven there once before back in 2006 in an MX5 race. Qualified 5th in wet conditions. And finished the race in 5th as well, but in the dry. Got the best time of 55.7s - not bad for the first time out! BUT... MOST IMPORTANTLY... I have clinched the 3rd place overall in the 2009 Championship!!! By just ONE POINT from Anthony Day. Phew... racing doesn't get much closer than that!!

So sadly the season is over and the long wait until the next one begins...
